How does the community benefit?
The camp is run by community members and profits are shared with the local community through assistance in funding community projects. At the moment we are employing a total of 90 at the camp, community primary school, community high school, gravity water flow scheme, vegetable project, ride for a woman, Buhoma sacco, community village walk to mention but a few.
Started in 1993 by some Mukono Parish members with the valued assistance of a US Peace Corp Volunteer, Mr John Duboir, Buhoma Community Developement Association (BCDA) is a community based business enterprise initiated and managed by the local coommunity around Bwindi Inpenetrable National Park (BINP).
It is located right at the entrance of Bwindi Inpenetrable National Park which is believed to be home to about half the world's population of the endangered Mountain Gorillas. Bwindi is also famous for "Albertine rift Endemic", a group of Birds specific to the Western Rift valley. Bwindi Inpenetrable National Park (BINP) is found in south Western Uganda, about 600KM from Kampala (Uganda's Capital).
One of the main reason that led to the creation of BCDA was to position the local communities around BINP to earn a living through methods that would not destroy their Bio-Diverse Environment, which happened to be home to the Endagered Gorillas and Albertine endemics. A direct result of this initiative has been the massive reduction in De-forrestation in the Buhoma area. Women in the area have also been empowered with skills that will help them provide for their families Financially While their Children are recieving quality Education that will, importantly teach them how to care for their environment for the benefit of futue generations.
Buhoma Community Rest Camp (BCRC) is the backbone of Buhoma Community Development Association. BCRC has been the main source of funding to the Association activities since it's inception in 1993 (alongside BMCDA).
BCRC is setup at the Edge of Bwindi impenetable National Park with the main aim of providing quality Lodging service to tourists and visitors.
We have got six (6) well finished safari tents, which are self-contained facing the forest with a spectacular view. Wake up and go to sleep with the relaxing music of nature. Two cottages that are self-contained facing the forest. Nothing beats the scenes that unfold right in front of you. Gorillas do drop by to say hullo occasionally.
We also have got five (5) twin cottage bandas which are non-self-contained and are built with local materials with African architectural design.
Our dormitory has got 6 beds and we have got camp sites all throughout the camp well covered with green grass surrounded with thick tropical forest.
BMCDA is also in the process of setting up a Luxury facililties to cater for High Class Tourists who visit BINP to increase our source of funding for community projects.
